In Strict Tempo, vol. 87: Out Of Office
I’m going on holiday for a couple of weeks tomorrow, so In Strict Tempo communications will be brief whilst I’m away. Next Friday I’ve got a special interview lined up, and the Friday after that sees a new edition of the Ceremony mix series that you’ll definitely want to check out. There won’t be any music reviews in either of those newsletters, but I’ll make it up to you when I’m back.
This is the first two-week holiday I’ve had for a few years, and I’ll be deep in Cathar country in the South of France. I don’t intend to do much other than drink a load of those little stubby bottles of beer and read a lot.
If you haven’t listened to it yet - a reminder to check out the last Ceremony mix from Volte-Face, it’s one he’s really proud of, and I’m greatful that I’m able to share it on In Strict Tempo
Before I go, a few new tunes to get you through the weekend.
Wolfgang Voigt - Ruckverzauberung Im Tunnel [Astral Industries]
You were expecting this to sound like GAS weren’t you? Wolfgang Voigt takes a massive detour away from his usual sound palate for this new longform piece via Astral Industries. It’s still ambient, it’s still a trip, it still features recurring echoes of the past floating in and out.
Mother - Select Mixes 2010-2025 Vol. 1 [WeTransfer]
Get this before it’s gone, over 2GB of mixes from the DJ’s DJ, Mother Mark. There’s sixteen mixes in this downloadable link from Glasgow’s finest, I’ve not listened to them all yet, but they’ll soundtrack the long drive through France nicely.
Download here, they’ll be gone by Monday!
Richie Culver - I Trust Pain [Fixed Abode]
A second single from Culver’s Rainy Miller produced new album. Really looking forward to hearing the album as a whole, signs are it’s gonna be a good’un.
Basic Unit - Receive/Hyphen/Closure [Sneaker Social Club]
Trust Sneaker to find this one. Basic Unit released a handful of singles and one album in the mid 1990’s, on labels such as Moving Shadow and Nocturnal. Darkside DnB at it’s best, this takes as much from the likes of Autechre as it does from Source Direct - both quoted as inspirations for the album.
Microcorps - Zona (feat. Regis) [Downwards]
Boomkat said a while ago that frontman Regis is the best kind of Regis and here he gets to indulge that once again on this collaborative track with Alexander Tucker’s techno-heavy alias Microcorps.
Seefeel - Pure, Impure [Too Pure]
Coming in October (!!) this reissue of Seefeel’s early material shows off the kind of chops that led to the band signing to Warp. Features all three early EP’s plus the AFX remixes and some unreleased material, it feels like a good time to revisit it.
Starts of the Lid - Music for Nitrous Oxide (30th Anniversary Remastered) [Artificial Pine Arch Manufacturing]
One of the foundational drone albums here now reissued for it’s 30th birthday. This inspired so much of what followed in experimental music, from guitars, to electronics, to tape decay and everything inbetween. Far from an easy listen, it’s still worth checking out if you haven’t heard it.
