In Strict Tempo, vol. 76: News Round-Up
Welcome to this week’s In Strict Tempo - coming to you from sunny Brighton. As mentioned last week I’m making my panel debut at Brighton Music Conference today - in a couple of hours or so. If you’re about feel free to drop by, as always it’s good to put faces to names. The panel is in association with the Association for Electronic Music, and my co-panellists are a really cool and interesting bunch of people so it should be a good one.
Next month Warp Records are doing a label showcase at London’s Barbican centre. It’s the first event of this type they’ve done in years. I’m away that weekend, but the lineup looks incredible. They’ve invited my friend Steven of Deeper Into Movies to have a good old root around in the Warp Vision archives, and he’s got some amazing music videos lined up to show on the day.
Also at the Barbican is an exhibition called Feel The Sound, using musical frequencies to massage and heal visitors. Pretty sure DMZ at Mass in Brixton used to do the same thing…
The Quietus have put together a great long-read on the Editions Mego label. Founder Peter Rehberg passed away a few years ago but the label has continued under the guidance of his partner and daughter. It’s not hyperbole to say that Mego is one of the most visionary labels of all time, and this article is a good introduction to it.
Surgeon is one of my favourite DJs and producers, and he’s also the subject of an interview with Resident Advisor this week, talking about his new album Shell~Wave on Tresor. Well worth a listen.
New Music
Not a huge amount of new stuff this week as I’m writing this early, but still some good stuff to get yer ears around… Normal service resumes next week.
Sandwell District - Hidden (Daniel Avery Remix) [The Point of Departure]
You should all know by now that End Beginnings is likely to be one of my albums of the year. Daniel Avery has turned in a remix of Hidden that takes the original in a different direction. If you haven’t already you can read my interview with Sandwell District here.
Francesco Leali - Immortal [99CHANTS]
Milan based composer & producer Francesco Leali takes a turn into the neon night on this first track from his upcoming album on the 99CHANTS label. Cinematic and expansive, sitting somewhere between Tron & Blade Runner it shows an artist who isn’t afraid to push boundaries & move out of his comfort zone.
Mark Ernestus Ndagga Rhythm Force - Khadim [Ndagga]
It’s been a while since we’ve had anything from Mark Ernestus Ndagga Rhythm Force project, so a new album is always welcome. Imagine Rhythm & Sound but with a Senegalese influence instead of Caribbean. In the immortal words of Hardwax… TIP!
Rhythm & Sound/Basic Channel etc - Various
Staying on an Ernestus tip, loads of these records have just been repressed, having been out of print for ages. They probably deserve a better write-up than what I’m giving them here (I should really do a dub-techno special, shouldn’t I?). Fill yer boots, they’re all essential!
